Jeffrey Thompson, according to prosecutors, has funded Washington D.C.’s political corruption for years. Now, he will spend months in prison!
Thompson was convicted of running an illegally-funded shadow campaign for Mayor Vincent Gray, the former Mayor of Washington, D.C. Thompson also did the same thing for Hillary Clinton.
Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotely presided over the case, going beyond the prosecution’s sentencing recommendations for Thompson. Saying that Thompson’s case reveals the true, rotten nature of D.C. politics, Judge Kollar-Kotely went above the recommended three months of home confinement.
Thompson pleaded guilty to funneling money into Gray’s 2010 mayoral campaign, but Gray denied ever knowing about it and was never charged.
Thompson, who is a former city contractor, financed an independent effort to reach black voters on behalf of Hillary Clinton in Texas and three other states starting in the 2008 primaries, according to the Washington Post in 2013 report (below). These expensive activities were illegal and never disclosed on campaign finance records:
Thompson allegedly paid Troy White, a New York marketing executive, more than $608,000 to hire “street teams” to distribute posters, stickers and yard signs beginning in February 2008 to help raise Clinton’s profile during her primary battle with then-Sen. Barack Obama, according to the documents and interviews with several people familiar with the investigation.
A search of federal campaign records found no evidence that Thompson or White disclosed the alleged expenditures or activities to the Federal Election Commission, as required by campaign finance laws.
The new accusations came to light when White pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor tax charge, becoming the latest Thompson associate implicated in a far-reaching investigation that has explored the businessman’s alleged secret role in funding political campaigns.
In addition, Hillary Clinton received thousands of dollars from employees of Thompson’s accounting firm, Thompson, Cobb, Bazilio & Associates. Federal prosecutors called the firm an “assembly line for illegal campaign contributions.”
Thompson’s sentence should have been longer, but it’s important that Hillary Clinton’s corrupt campaign team – along with Hillary Clinton herself – see the inside of a jail cell. She and her campaign has repeatedly broken the law, and they deserve server criminal punishment.
