Just In: 3 Democratic Congressmen Arrested Outside Trump Tower

It has just been announced that three Democratic congressmen have been arrested during a protest outside Trump Tower in New York City on Tuesday. They were protesting President Donald Trump’s immigration policies… what a surprise. Among those arrested were Arizona Representative Raúl Grijalva‏, Illinois Representative Luis Gutiérrez, and New York Representative Adriano Espaillat. Grijalva’s campaign Twitter account and a Gutiérrez aide confirmed that the men were taken into custody by police.

The three congressmen weren’t the only names in politics who were arrested. New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito was also among those arrested. She is considered by New York political observers to be a possible future mayoral or congressional candidate. Seems like she blew those opportunities.

A Gutiérrez spokesman provided a statement by Gutiérrez following the arrest in which the congressman had stated, “we’re taking the necessary steps to make it clear to President Trump, the Republicans and the Democrats that we will continue this peaceful fight for DREAMers and immigrants as long as it takes to enact legislation and put DREAMers in a safe place. A few Congressmen and elected-officials gathering in front of Trump Tower doesn’t mean much if it is not backed up by the grassroots and allies and today we are standing with diverse allies to make sure Congress and the President do more than just talk about solutions, they actually follow through with action.”

It’s been known for a while now that Gutiérrez is an extremely emotional advocate for immigrants (both legal and illegal.) He has been one of the biggest critics of President Donald Trump’s swift actions to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

The Washington Examiner reported:

Reps. Raul Grijalva and Luis Gutierrez were arrested outside Trump Tower Tuesday afternoon after sitting in the street outside the building in Manhattan.

Reports from the scene indicated Grijalva, D-Ariz., and Gutierrez, D-Ill., were among multiple lawmakers who joined a crowd sitting in the street outside the building.

The following are tweets from one of the arrested congressman’s Twitter accounts:

resident Trump is currently in New York at the United Nations. He had given a speech on Tuesday morning, the same day as the protests.

Ironically enough, this isn’t Gutiérrez’s first time being arrested. He was taken into custody in August outside of the White House when he was involved in a different protest in support of illegal immigrants. He was cleared last week over that particular arrest by the House Ethics Committee. He has also been in hot water lately for verbally attacking White House Chief of Staff John Kelly. The reason he was so angry was due to President Trump’s decision to end DACA. He was quoted calling Kelly (a retired Marine general) “a hypocrite who is a disgrace to the uniform he used to wear.” It was stated by House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Republican, California) that Congressman Gutiérrez owed Kelly a formal apology.

Although the final outcome for these congressmen is not known yet, you can be sure we will keep you posted.
